About the Piece

I had to do a Prince piece.

Music was always around when I was growing up. My mom would sing constantly while cleaning or just moving around the house. The Dutch introduced me to a lot of different music. Weekends were often spent recording reel-to-reel tapes from albums he brought home.

Eagles. Pink Floyd. KISS. Van Halen.

But I clearly remember going to see Purple Rain at the base theater on a date with a girl named Veronica. I don’t remember much about the date… but I remember the movie.

It was one of those moments that widens your world.

You walk out realizing music could be bigger than what you already knew. It makes you think that maybe anyone can do something amazing if they just go after it.

The movie also showed me something else — that other homes had their own storms too. Parents yelling. Anger. The kind of things kids sometimes grow up around and learn to survive.

But through all of that… the music was incredible.

Purple Rain changed how I listened to music after that. It made me start searching for more of it.

So this piece is a bit of a thank you to that moment.
