About the Piece

I can never hear Journey or Steve Perry without thinking of Jackie.

Somewhere between the ages of 11 and 13, while my parents were stationed in Germany, I started seeing Jackie. I was going to Bitburg Middle School, and she may very well have been my first real girlfriend.

At the same time, my home life was rough. I was one of those kids who was expected to be seen and not heard. There was plenty of yelling, wooden spoons, hands, and sometimes going without dinner.

Back then, my friends were my real family.

Any chance I got to disappear into David’s basement, playing D&D, watching David Letterman, or listening to music with Jackie, was better than being at home with the adults.

It is funny how life works. In many ways, it was the worst time in my life. But somehow, it was also one of the best.

To this day, I still talk to Jackie. And David and I found each other again through social media. Two of my oldest friends, still connected to a part of my life I will never forget.
